Mary McLeod Bethune was a Baptist preacher and philanthropist who was the first African-American woman to receive an honorary degree from a white university. She was also the founder of Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona, Florida. In 1923, she was invited to speak at an anti-slavery meeting at Atlanta University. Her speech was greeted with hostility by some whites who had not understood what she meant.

For this reason, she wrote this famous quote. The day after the speech, Dr. Bethune received a note that said: "No one can say anything against Mary McLeod Bethune without my immediate interference."
